Athene on Youtube…. Interesting Phenomenon

I have RSS feeds to see the weekly most viewed, most commented etc… for Youtube. I consistently see these guys. Every week they must get around 1 millions views and more then 100 000 youtube users have subscribed to their videos.

- “A reality web-series about true pro gaming”.

- They were interviewed by the LA Times and called “One of Youtube’s biggest hit factories”

- Athene is a Dutch speaking Belge with an interesting English accent.

- Athene seems to be one of the best players of World of Warcraft in the world (Best Paladin at least)

- He uses excellent video titles and use thumbnails of his girlfriend in sexy positions to attract attention/views.

- Content is WEIRD. From sex, lots of swearing, to gaming tips, to his family members, to internet neutrality….You may think the guy is on coke…. but I don’t think he is. He’s very hyper active, uses gamer talk like “I will “poon” all you noobs”. I think it means “I’ll kick all new comers ass”.

So far you may think this is normal…. but they also created a community called “i-Power”:

I Power is a lifestyle based on 3 principles:

1. Being open-minded
2. Active thinking
3. Putting your vision into practice

They were also involved in Belge politics.

I find this interesting because it’s extremly popular, very entertaining and they advocate positive attitude “malgré tout”. I find it interesting… because it’s hard to say why he’s so popular. He has a certain style.  I find it interesting because I watch all his vids… but I have no idea why I’m interested. I just feel like it’s a NEW phenomenon.  I’m not sure what it is… but…it’s a mix of teenage rants getting access to broadcasting technology (youtube) with a very good sense of what sells online. They are very skilled business men. But I don’t think they do it so much for the money. I’m not even sure they make money.

UDC – Suis-je vraiment en Suisse ?

Nul besoin de vous rappeler que je suis un étranger en Suisse. Mais on me confond surement avec les moutons blancs. Sauf quand j’ouvre la bouche….. Je suis un peu abasourdie…ces affiches sont un peu partout en Suisse.

Il n’y a guère d’autre pays au monde où vivent autant d’étrangers qu’en Suisse. Si la majeure partie d’entre eux respectent nos lois, on compte un nombre trop élevé d’étrangers qui abusent de notre hospitalité. Ils commettent des délits graves, menacent notre propriété et même notre intégrité physique et notre vie.

La compétitivité plutôt que la dette

Enfin, l’ancien premier ministre (de septembre 1994 à janvier 1996) a rappelé que la dette du Québec diminuait par rapport à la taille de l’économie québécoise. Il a également mentionné que la natalité semblait vouloir remonter depuis quelques années.

Pour ces raisons, il est malsain que le gouvernement enlève des ressources en éducation pour rembourser la dette. Il a d’ailleurs qualifié cette dernière de véritable « hantise » dans la « psychologie collective »

Wow! Rafraîchissant pour un homme de son age. Le discours sur la dette lors de la dernière élection québécoise me semblait tout à fait inutile. Un gouvernement a le droit et le devoir d’avoir une dette. On a tous des dettes et elle nous permettent d’obtenir des choses qu’on ne pourrait pas se permettre autrement. Avantage de plus pour un gouvernement, c’est qu’il ne « mourra » pas… donc il peut payer sa dette sur 100 et même 150 ans. C’est normal et ça permet d’investir dans l’avenir. Si notre dette diminue par rapport à l’économie, que la population augmente et qu’on ne fait pas de déficit…. EVERYTHING IS FINE.

ahhhh la débutante! Je vois pas pourquoi elle dit ca. C’est surement pas un véritable amour du Québec et son avenir. Elle ne fait que se tirer dans le pied. Le prochain premier ministre du Canada ne sera surement pas séparatiste. Si jamais elle est élue… elle aura a s’expliquer. J’aime bien ce qu’elle dit. Mais ca démontre VRAIMENT un manque d’expérience flagrant. On lui reproche justement de toujours dire ce que veulent entendre les gens. Elle demande même au français ce qu’ils veulent… et elle les écoutera. Mon cœur est heureux d’entendre ceci… mais si j’étais français je me poserais des questions sur ces qualités en diplomatie internationale. Quoi qu’en y pensant bien… ceci n’a pas empêcher Jean Chrétien de se faire élire.

Expérience en “Live direct”:

Je voulais simplement acheter un câble Ethernet de 30 m. et j’ai RIEN eu…. ca fais 3 mois de ca. Le produit c’est perdu entre Pixmania et la compagnie de livraison. Ils ont ouvert une ENQUÊTE il y a un mois de ca. Une ENQUÊTE ???? Ils ont surement contacté Interpol et mis Dr. Watson sur le dossier. Go Go Gadget!

Je suis en attente..LÀ LÀ! Car leur seule réponse est de m’offrir un remboursement. Ils sont TROP cons. On m’a raccroché “accidentellement” au nez 2 fois… et c’est 15 centimes\min. IIIIIIRHRHRHRH!@$\@#$&@$?*#?&*&( ca vient de raccrocher encore…. c’est pas croyable cette merde.

Contre toute attente, c’est Stéphane Dion qui a remporté la course à la direction du Parti libéral du Canada, samedi. M. Dion a battu Michael Ignatieff au quatrième tour de scrutin.

Je suis content de voir Mr. Dion à la tête du PLC. Je ne crois pas qu’il pourra devenir premier ministre du Canada. Jamais les Québécois ne pourront voter pour lui. Celui qui a concocté la loi sur la clarté en 1999. Un peu plus de Harper fera surement du bien à la cause séparatiste.

J’ai presque le gout de dire que c’est une perte de temps, un coup politique.

On en fait quoi de cette reconnaissance? Elle sert à quoi? Ca apaise le sentiment nationaliste de façon très crapuleuse… en répétant à sa femme qu’il l’aime plus que tout au monde, le batteur de femme s’assure qu’elle reste. J’aime pas! Si les choses ne changent pas, que le Québec n’obtient pas plus de pouvoir, tout ceci ne sert malheureusement à rien.

#10 Malibu: Getty Villa

“The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria.”

We were not sure we would stop by. The guide talked about reserving 3 weeks before hand (even though the visit was free). It even sounded a bit kitsch “Roman Villa Reproduction”???. But we had enjoyed the Getty Center (see below) SO much..that we turned right from Pacific Coast Highway at the last second, almost made the car behind crash into us… A Bentley and a Rolls Royce in front of us made us smile and wonder if we would be able to go in. The security guy asked if we had tickets…. I said: “no”. Then he asked were we were from… I said: “France”. He yanked 2 ruffled tickets out of his shirt pocket and with a big smile said: “Enjoy your visit!” We really did. (wikipedia) Getty Villa, Our photos and a short movie below.

#9 Berkley: Taste Restaurant\Wine Bar

Our Lonely Planet guide said the food was the only reason to visit Berkley…. it was right. We wanted to go to Chez Panisse but it was full till 10.30pm. Since we didn’t have that much time we went to a resto close by. We usually kept to the guide for restaurant choices… but we risked it and were not disappointed. The best food we had on our trip. Taste was a mix of French, Mediterrean and Californian cuisine.

#8 Santa Barbara

Beyond what the name conjures up; TV shows, Soap Operas, rich & famous, retired people from LA… we loved this city: great shopping, beautiful flowers\trees\plants and people watching on State Street, many Mexican reminders everywhere. The restaurant with the best atmosphere and great harbor view; Brophy Brothers Restaurant and Clam Bar. Our photos,

#7 Pigeon Point

A nice little spot suggested by Zu. It had this kind of romantic-horror movie atmosphere. Very calming, yet intense. A bit Hitchkocky. You could stare at the ocean, the fog, the waves, the pelicans flying by and the lazy seals on their rocks for a long time.

#5 Organic Strawberries

From Santa Cruz to San-Francisco we saw many of these Organic\No Spray road side produce vendors. Reminded me of “l’ile d’Orléans” à Québec. We just had to stop.

These were the best strawberries I ever tasted. Actually, all the fruits we had there were delicious. The morning orange juices were also incredibly tasty. As if I had never had real orange juice before.

#4 Pacific Cost Highway

Beautiful drive! Breath-taking roads and views. It was often hard to drive and try to look at the sea and the cliffs. Many available “view points” make it easy to stop and take in the beauty of it all. Being next to the sea imposes a certain life perspective, makes you remember how small you are…. a very relaxing feeling.

#3 Venice Beach

One of the “poems” that had it’s beginning on this beach was The Doors “Hello, I Love You,” (1965) which was inspired by a young, tall, thin black girl who was walking towards Jim as he sat on a Venice Beach bench.

#2 San-Francisco

This is the US I love. It’s hard to precisely explain why. It’s multicultural, beautiful, friendly, intense cultural scene, environment friendly, tech friendly…. I think this is what we all imagine when we think of the US. Not the Bush US, but the intello, left wing, socialist, French loving America ;)

#1 LA: Getty Center

Modern architecture and gardens.

What a place! We only spent a couple of hours at The Getty. We would have spent easily a full day. It’s the only attraction that would bring me back to LA. It’s on top a hill and you need to take a train shuttle to get there. Once there you are surprised by the modernity and beauty of it all. Everything feels right. All the material used, the spaces, the buildings, nature… it’s all extremely well thought of. Walking and visiting it seems natural. Everything just seems to flow right.

Thanks to JR, Steve, Kristian, Pat and Zu for your great suggestions. We didn’t get to visit everything…I guess we’ll just have to go back ;)

An excellent movie! Natalie Portman is very good and extremely credible (besides her fake Brit accent). Has excellent suspense all the way through. Good entertainment by the directors of The Matrix. Story is has simple as The Matrix… and has somewhat similar concepts. (matrix, totalitarianism, fascism …)
