Could Barack Hussein Obama be the next US President ?

December 13, 2006

A BBC article on him here.

Barack Obama also has a good line to fend off any questions about his weird name.

“When I first started to work in public life… people would ask: ‘Hey brother, what’s with your name? You called Alabama or Yo’ Mama?’”

As for the unfortunate middle name, Hussein means “blessed” in Arabic and as the senator puts it: “The American people don’t care about middle names.”

His inexperience in the Senate may turn out to be an asset and he has the same talent that JFK apparently had of appearing glamorous and humble at the same time.

When pressed about an apparent admission in print that he had smoked marijuana, Barack Obama replied: “Yes, and I inhaled. That was the point.”

He sounds a bit like a preacher in the above clip.

Interesting links on him:

His new book (The Audacity of Hope) is now on Amazon’s #2 Sales Rank, just after: You: On A Diet: The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management ;)

The French CNN; France 24

December 6, 2006

http://www.france24.com/live/

As of today, this is a new source of information to compete with CNN, BBC World, AL Jazeera …

It’s in French, English and Arab. Chirac’s baby…it should give a French spin on world events. I would be happy if this was as good as the BBC.

Here’s the Wikipedia take on it.

Mr. Dion, Mr. Harper……ou une séparation?

December 3, 2006

Sephane Dion Serge Chapleau

For years, Stéphane Dion was the most-reviled politician in Quebec. He was the so-called “arch-federalist” that all sovereigntists and nationalists loved to hate and whom most francophone federalists were unwilling to defend. He was the father of the Clarity Act that even Paul Martin dared not support. Because of his mousy face, La Presse cartoonist Serge Chapleau used to represent him as a rat, with small pointed ears, its mustachioed muzzle contracted in an arrogant sneer, and the tail emerging from beneath his suit.

Can’t Sleep? Try OTR.

November 8, 2006

http://www.otr.net/

“The OTR.Network Library is a free resource for Old Time Radio (OTR) fans. We have over 12,000 OTR shows available for instant listening, with 100 more added each week.”

What is OTR?

From Wikipedia:

Old-Time Radio (OTR) and the Golden Age of Radio are phrases used to refer to radio programs (audio theater) mainly broadcast, in the USA, during the 1920s through the late 1950s.

By those who listened to the shows at the time, vintage radio is now most vividly remembered by its most vivid fragments: fanfares and show openings, running gags, trademark sounds and newsworthy events, such as the headlines generated by The War of the Worlds when it was dramatized on Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater on the Air. Some still recall the creaking-door sound effect on Inner Sanctum Mysteries, the Dragnet theme music, the “Hi-Yo, Silver!” call of the Lone Ranger or the cackle of The Shadow: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.”

I’m really hooked on this stuff. It’s very simple and naive. It has these very cool intense and DRAMATIC orchestral music  effects that can’t help but put a smile on your face.

My personal favorite is”The Saint” with Vincent Price.

Should We Trust Wikipedia?

August 1, 2006

http://en.wikipedia.org/ A free content, multilingual encyclopedia written collaboratively by contributors around the world. The site is a Wiki – anybody can edit and add to an article. Offers quick understanding on controversial issues. Strong in current affairs.

Here’s what it says about Canada’s ex Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien:

Born in Shawinigan, Quebec, as the 18th of 19 children (a number of whom did not survive infancy) to Willie Chrétien and Marie Boisvert, Jean Chrétien studied law at Université Laval. Chrétien would later make light of his humble origins, calling himself “le petit gars de Shawinigan,” or the “little guy from Shawinigan.”

How about what it says about PET, another ex Canadian PM:

Trudeau was interested in Marxist ideas in the late 1940s. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he was a supporter of the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation party — which became the New Democratic Party. During the 1950s, he was blacklisted by the United States and prevented from entering that country because of a visit to a conference in Moscow (where he was briefly arrested for throwing a snowball at a statue of Stalin) and because he subscribed to a number of leftist publications. Trudeau later appealed the ban, and it was rescinded.

So, If we listen to Colbert, we could all go and edit PET’s page on Wikipedia and say he was arrested in Moscow for pissing on a Stalin shaped snowman….. he had created in the middle of Red Square. I wonder how many edits we would need in order to get this up. Who moderates Wikipedia? Do they have an agenda? Seems like they often block users.
Here’s what it says about Normand l’Amour… soon to be deleted:

Replace Star Trek with the new BSG

June 8, 2006

bstar

Battlestar Galactica is a dark, sexy, political Sci-Fi show. True! The actors are not the best. True! They don’t have enough budget for the HUGE, complex story they want to draw us in….. But it’s the best sci-fi out there. I haven’t been hooked on a series like this, since Six Feet Under. They are totally different series…yes!… but they both have a flawed human side to them that make one fall in love with the characters.

Visit the show's site here. You can see a whole episode (no need for any player like Real, QuickTime or Windows Media Player… it’s all in Flash and it makes it a whole lot smoother), actor interviews, director podcast, deleted scenes, blog….everything you need to get hooked. This is a fracking good show ;)

Merci Max!

Selling Your Creations Online

June 2, 2006

zup
These great watercolors are from Zu Ponca. You can buy them on eBay. Her best stuff is not even online yet ;)

I was reading a post on Seth Godin's blog and was surprised by how fast you can create something (clips, movies, paintings, ecolo handbags, podiobooks…) and find people that will be interested in buying, listening, watching and reading.

Isn't this a bit like being able to live again from "artisanat"? Away from the industrial machines…? Technology is making it possible to live in Pondichéry and sell your stuff in LA. Paypal makes it very easy for the money to be sent straight to your bank account.

I wish I had the creative side to be able to sell something. I'm sure we all have hobbies that could "sell".

Internet has had this promise for years now… but easy tools are now making it possible to actually take advantage of it.

GO and create!
